Serials Catalog Librarian.  Rice University is seeking a librarian to
serve as the library's primary resource person on serials cataloging.
Reporting to the Head of Cataloging, the serials catalog librarian
coordinates serials activities with all affected library operations,
including Reference/Collection Development, Satellite Collections,
Electronic Text Center, Government Documents, Shelving, Acquisitions
(including Serials Receiving), and Database Management (including
Binding).

Fondren Library provides opportunities to participate in the development
of new library services while continuing to offer excellence in the
provision of its ongoing services.  Fondren participates in many regional
and national collaborative library projects, including JSTOR, Project
Muse, and SPARC.  Preparation for a new building/addition includes an
extensive collection management project, with significant impact on
bibliographic control, housing, and retention of journal holdings.  The
library is exploring multiple approaches to description and access for
electronic resources, including serials.  An active program of digital
resource development is grounded in successful collaboration with
University information technology staff and a broadening range of
well-supported interdepartmental projects.

Primary responsibilities:  Performs cataloging and other
cataloging-related activities for serials in Fondren Library collections,
promoting smooth workflow and good public service.  Performs database and
related physical updates connected with serials changes and manages
special projects.  Solves complex problems and provides significant input
on relevant policies and procedures, including those affecting electronic
formats, MARC holdings, and serials control.  Participates in professional
activities on campus and at local/national levels.

Requirements:  ALA-accredited MLS; one to two years relevant experience;
working knowledge of one or more modern European languages; knowledge of
AACR2, LCSH, LC classification, and MARC; awareness of national trends in
serials cataloging, including PCC and CONSER activities; excellent
communication, planning, and organizational skills; ability to work
independently; experience with one or more bibliographic utilities (OCLC,
RLIN) and integrated library systems.

Preferred qualifications:  Two years of professional experience in an
automated serials and/or cataloging operation in an academic library;
knowledge of OCLC and Sirsi.

Salary/benefits:  $30,712 minimum, with hiring salary commensurate with
experience and qualifications; no state or local income tax;  career
advancement program; 21 benefit days; 8 study days;  TIAA/CREF; health and
