VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Hoover Institution library, a coordinate library at Stanford
University, is seeking qualified candidates for a professional position.
This is a career track position, although the initial term will be for

Position title: Head of Serials Dept.
Classification: Assistant Librarian $36,132-47,436
Associate Librarian $40,044-53,136
Applications submitted by December 15, 1998 will receive first
consideration, but this position will remain open until filled.
The Head of the Serials Dept. reports directly to the Head of the Western
Languages Library and is responsible for the administration of the Serials
Dept.
Duties:
Manage the overall workflow of the Department. Plan and manage serials
acquisitions processes (ordering and receiving), invoice processing,
checkin, bindery preparation, cataloging and catalog maintenance, and the
public services component of the Current Periodicals unit.
Supervise and train staff. Administer annual performance evaluations.
Prepare departmental documentation.
Coordinate cataloging activities with original cataloging and the
Head of Monographic Receiving. May contribute original cataloging.
Maintain awareness of current trends in serials librarianship,
especially technical services. Display a commitment to professional
development.
Establish and maintain vendor relations and monitor vendor performance.
Collect and report statistical data during the year. Compile end
of the year report. Monitor fiscal data with payment staff.
Represent the department in Hoover meetings and in meetings with
Stanford University Libraries.
May be assigned other tasks by the Head Librarian or Deputy
Director of the Institution.
Qualifications:
Required:
M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited program.
Professional experience working in a serials dept. or equivalent.
Demonstrated knowledge of serials librarianship.
Proven supervisory experience, interpersonal and leadership skills.
Knowledge of at least one modern, European foreign language.
Experience with automated library systems and personal computers.
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly in written and spoken
English.
Preferred:
Demonstrated analytical, planning and management skills.
Experience in serials cataloging; use of tools such as CONSER.
Experience in an academic/research library.
Experience in public services.
