EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
PENNSYLVANIA ACADEMIC LIBRARY CONSORTIUM, INC. (PALCI)

 Position.  The Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium, Inc. (PALCI)
formed in 1996 as a grassroots federation of 38 public and private
academic libraries throughout the Commonwealth.  The mission is to improve
virtual library services for its members, with two initial programs: (1)
creation of a virtual online union catalog using a Web and Z39.50-based
interface to multiple vendor systems to enable direct patron borrowing,
and (2)  negotiation of statewide licenses for electronic information
sources. More information about PALCI can be found at

Description of Duties. The Executive Director, in consultation with the
Executive Committee and membership, is responsible for: general
leadership, administration, planning, and budgeting; developing the
programmatic agenda;  providing technical solutions to enable virtual
library services; performing continuous membership outreach; identifying
potential electronic information resources of interest to the members and
negotiating consortial licensing terms;  developing funding proposals;
and, representing PALCI and participating in appropriate regional and
national to advance the work of the consortium.  Some travel required,
especially to member institutions and to funding sources.  The position
reports to the Chair of the PALCI Executive Board.

Qualifications. Required: advanced degree in a relevant discipline; 8-10
years' increasingly responsible library administration experience,
preferably in academic libraries; general knowledge of library-related
information technology; proven experience working well with groups; a
vision of library cooperation and information technology; open and
consultative leadership style. Preferred: experience in the library
consortia environment; demonstrated administrative experience at a senior
level;  successful record of fund-raising (grants, foundations, state
funding, etc.); strong organizational, planning, and communication
abilities; national reputation and good standing in the U.S. library
community; sensitive to the needs and concerns of academic libraries;
ability to handle complex projects; evidence of developing creative and
workable solutions; and, an ability to produce work on a deadline.

 Salary. Commensurate with the qualifications of an individual who
possesses strong and relevant administrative and technical experience.
