        Vermont Newspaper Project Coordinator

POSITION TITLE: Project Coordinator, Vermont Newspaper Project (temporary
position, funded through June 2000)

REPORTS TO: Co-Directors of the Vermont Newspaper Project

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
In consultation with Project co-directors and systems personnel at the
University of Vermont and with technical services staff at the Vermont
Department of Libraries, the Project Coordinator is responsible for the
day-to-day management of the Vermont Newspaper Project, based at the Dept.
of Libraries in Montpelier, including: Implementation of
microfilming/preservation operations; Database maintenance activities --
including oversight, maintenance, and development of a searchable World
Wide Web-based database of Vermont newspapers; General maintenance and
oversight over the Project's World Wide Web site;  Oversight of cataloging
and bibliographic control activities at home base and in the field. The
Project Coordinator is responsible for supervising 1.5 FTE, establishing
and implementing procedures, and monitoring workflow and output. This is
an NEH grant-supported, temporary full-time position, funded through June
of the year 2000.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
   1.Responsible for implementing microfilming operations; identifies
        candidate titles for microfilming; negotiates for microfilming
        services; trains staff in preservation and inspection methods;
        creates and implements targeting procedures; mends and collates
        newspapers for microfilming; executes reel programming.
   2.Maintains and develops Vermont Newspaper Database. Coordinates with
        systems staff at the University of Vermont in implementing
        web-based searchable database of Vermont titles.
   3.Maintains and develops Vermont Newspaper Project Web site.
   4.Has oversight over cataloging procedures. Catalogs newspapers
        according to AACR2/CONSER/USNP guidelines.  Oversees OCLC
        bibliographic and union listing activities.
   5.Supervises 1.5 FTE Project staff.
   6.Monitors workflow and progress of the project; reports progress on
        specified schedule.
   7.Maintains complete and accurate records of all work performed.
   8.Performs additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
MLS from ALA-accredited school; knowledge of microfilming preparation or
preservation activities for newspapers; one or more years of cataloging
and supervisory experience, preferably in a research institution; working
knowledge of AACR2 and MARC serials format; experience with newspapers
and/or serials; experience with online computer systems, including OCLC,
database management software (MS Visual FoxPro and/or Inmagic), and
Internet applications (e.g. electronic mail, HTML markup and World Wide
Web site development); strong interpersonal and communication skills and
the ability to work harmoniously with a variety of people; demonstrated
ability to pay attention to detail; flexibility and willingness to shift
priorities according to current needs; a sense of humor; commitment to
professional growth. Some travel is required.

SALARY & APPLICATION INFORMATION:

Faculty member will be hired at the Instructor or Assistant Professor
level. Salary minimum: $27,500 for Library Instructor;  $31,000 for
Library Assistant Professor.
