Resource Services Department

The 19 librarians and 34 support staff who comprise the Resource
Services Department are organized into three sections: Acquisitions,
Central Bibliographic Services, and Contributed Cataloging. The
Department is responsible for expending the library resources budget
that averages about $6,000,000 annually, receiving more than 19,000
current serial titles, and creating and maintaining the University of
Florida's online library catalog of over 1.9 million titles.

The Acquisitions Section is responsible for ordering, receiving, and
paying for materials in many formats. The section has four units. The
Monographs Unit oversees all domestic and foreign approval plans and
manages order requests from Collection Management. The Serials Unit
orders, claims, receives, and posts payment for new and subscription
serials titles. The Unit is also responsible for bibliographic and
authority control and database maintenance of the Library serials
holdings and submits upgraded serials records to CONSER as a
contributing member. The Gifts & Exchange Unit manages gift receipt,
selection, and deselection. The Paying Unit processes invoice for
payment, prepares financial reports, and maintains department
statistics.

The Central Bibliographic Services Section is responsible for
distribution, copy cataloging, catalog database maintenance, and
authority processing. The section is composed of three units. The
Distribution/Copy Cataloging Unit distributes incoming monographs for
cataloging, using LC, OCLC and RLIN databases to facilitate organization
of materials. The Database Management Unit maintains the accuracy of
the LUIS catalog database and coordinates maintenance projects. The
Authority Control Unit is responsible for maintaining files of official
forms of names used as subjects, series and authors in the LUIS
database.

The Contributed Cataloging Section is responsible for organizing,
describing, and providing subject analysis for Library materials. The
section consists of three units: Science Cataloging, Social Sciences
Cataloging, and Special Collections/Humanities Cataloging. Contributed
Cataloging staff create and contribute original cataloging records to
OCLC as well as to the National Agricultural Library's AGRICOLA database
and add to national quality control by contributing original name and
subject records through the NACO and SACO programs.
