Provides full level original cataloging using AACR2 and LC classification and subject headings according to University of Florida (UF) cataloging policies and CONSER guidelines; creates and maintains serials holding records according to UF implementation of MARC Format for Holdings & Locations (MFHL) in LUIS, the NOTIS-based online system supported by the Florida Center for Library Automation (FCLA); upgrades and authenticates existing catalog records to CONSER standards; and establishes authoritative forms of names using NACO standards. Responsible for license agreement processing, from selection to cataloging, of materials that require signed licensing contracts. RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Catalogs serials in all subjects and in all formats, with special emphasis on electronic serial publications and resources. Serves as backup to CONSER coordinator. Contributes to both CONSER and NACO programs as appropriate. Keeps current with cataloging incoming serial titles and electronic serial publications and resources. 2. Serves as Resource Services Department coordinator and representative for all electronic serial activities. Maintains the electronic resource database for materials requiring licensing agreements. Shares with monographic electronic media cataloger the primary monitoring of trends and distribution of electronic-based information. Participates in Department and library-wide forums on coordinating the acquisitions of and access to electronic resources. 3. Assists in management of the Serials Unit by establishing policies and procedures that coordinate UF serials processing with national standards and locally decentralize serial maintenance and processing. Works with Serials Unit staff to solve complex serial cataloging problems, handles binding and holding maintenance questions and assists with training staff. Serves as serial resource person to other units in the libraries. 4. Works with the Collection Management Department, the Library Administration, the Systems Department, the Electronic Access Services Coordinator, and support staff in the Serials Unit to coordinate the order, receipt, cataloging, and access to electronic serials resources. 5. Participates in staffing the Humanities and Social Sciences Periodicals Room information desk. 6. Contributes to the development of departmental and library goals, policies, procedures, and priorities by working with a variety of groups and various assignments, and by drafting suggestions or responses to in-process documents. 7. Undertakes research and/or participates in appropriate professional and subject-related activities through national, state, and regional organizations. Develops and maintains knowledge base of current events, developments, trends, and issues related to cataloging serials in all formats with particular emphasis on electronic resources. 8. Serves on library and university committees as appropriate. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Master's degree from an ALA-accredited institution. 2. Demonstrated understanding and proficiency in the use of current and emerging technologies as information resources. 3. Demonstrated ability to communicate, both written and oral, and work effectively in a team as well as individually with faculty, staff, students and subscription agents. 4. Knowledge of AACR2, LC classification and subject headings, MARC formats, and use of an online cataloging system. 5. Working knowledge of one or more foreign languages. 6. Experience in planning, setting priorities, and problem-solving. 7. Experience with serials management. Experience on the paraprofessional level meets this requirement. Preferred: 1. One-year minimum experience with serials cataloging. 2. One year minimum experience with managing print and electronic publishing, licensing, and access issues. 3. Reading knowledge of German. Environment: Resource Services Department The 19 librarians and 34 support staff who comprise the Resource Services Department are organized into three sections: Acquisitions, Central Bibliographic Services, and Contributed Cataloging. The Department is responsible for expending the library resources budget that averages about $6,000,000 annually, receiving more than 19,000 current serial titles, and creating and maintaining the University of Florida's online library catalog of over 1.9 million titles. The Acquisitions Section is responsible for ordering, receiving, and paying for materials in many formats. The section has four units. The Monographs Unit oversees all domestic and foreign approval plans and manages order requests from Collection Management. The Serials Unit orders, claims, receives, and posts payment for new and subscription serials titles. The Unit is also responsible for bibliographic and authority control and database maintenance of the Library serials holdings and submits upgraded serials records to CONSER as a contributing member. The Gifts & Exchange Unit manages gift receipt, selection, and deselection. The Paying Unit processes invoice for payment, prepares financial reports, and maintains department statistics. The Central Bibliographic Services Section is responsible for distribution, copy cataloging, catalog database maintenance, and authority processing. The section is composed of three units. The Distribution/Copy Cataloging Unit distributes incoming monographs for cataloging, using LC, OCLC and RLIN databases to facilitate organization of materials. The Database Management Unit maintains the accuracy of the LUIS catalog database and coordinates maintenance projects. The Authority Control Unit is responsible for maintaining files of official forms of names used as subjects, series and authors in the LUIS database. The Contributed Cataloging Section is responsible for organizing, describing, and providing subject analysis for Library materials. The section consists of three units: Science Cataloging, Social Sciences Cataloging, and Special Collections/Humanities Cataloging. Contributed Cataloging staff create and contribute original cataloging records to OCLC as well as to the National Agricultural Library's AGRICOLA database and add to national quality control by contributing original name and subject records through the NACO and SACO programs.
