We try to avoid defining professional/scholarly, etc.  When a student asks, I
always tell them that the word means what their professor says it means.   I
have had too many incidents of someone being told something,
shall we say odd, that if I were to contradict it, might very well result in the
student getting a lower grade.  If
they really persist, I refer them to the reference desk where hopefully, one of
the ref librarians has already
dealt with the prof in question.
