Subject: Digitizing/Scanning
We are a community college library with approximately 600 periodical
subscription serving and an fte student population of an estimated 6,000 as
well as a significant number of community borrowers.
We are exploring the possibility of digitizing selections of our microfilm
collection for electronic reserves and scanning selected paper issues for
the same purposes.
I would appreciate any information on the following specific topics/issues:
1. Has anyone located an objective evaluation of digitizing and equipment
for libraries? Minolta, Canon, and Digiprint appear to be the front
runners, but I can't locate specific reviews.
2. Has anyone purchased equipment they are pleased with, or should they
have purchased different equipment?
3. How have you dealt with the copyright issues of putting your
microfilm/paper issues out on the web?
4. Has anyone establlished workflow patterns to deal successfully with the
digitizing and scanning processes?
5. If there are any important issues surrounding digitizing/scanning, I
would appreciate comments.
Replies can be made directly to me or to the list. Thank you.
