Subject: Changes for _LAPT_
_LIBRARY COLLECTIONS, ACQUISITIONS, AND TECHNICAL SERVICES_:
A TITLE CHANGE FOR _LAPT_
Over the course of the past 22 years, _Library Acquisitions: Practice &
Theory_ reflected the evolution of the subprofession of acquisitions
librarianship. Today, it is clear that acquisitions librarianship now
encompasses a wide range of technical services activities and the journal
reflects that expansion. As a result, I am pleased to announce a title
change for the journal which reflects this shifting content . Beginning
with volume 23 (1999), the journal will be called:
_Library Collections, Acquisitions, and Technical Services_
The revised Aims and Scope for _LCATS_ follows:
_Library Collections, Acquisitions, and Technical Services_ provides a
forum for the international exchange of ideas and experiences among members
of the library collection management, technical services, vendor and
publishing communities throughout the world. It is a comprehensive
publication designed to bring together many of the specializations within
the broad areas of library collection management and technical services
including, but by no means limited to, acquisition of books and serials in
academic, public, school and special libraries; cataloging and authority
control; outsourcing of technical services operations; electronic
publications; gifts and exchanges; microforms and other nonprint media, such
as electronic journals; document delivery; networking, resource sharing and
access; and pertinent library automation projects. In reflecting the broad,
practical and theoretical foundations of the discipline, _LCATS_ publishes
articles based on the practical work experiences of librarians, vendors and
publishers as well as research reports and papers on theory.
For the editors and Editorial Board of the journal making a title change
was not undertaken lightly. The Board spent the last year considering the
need for this title change to reflect shifting content and to reflect the
merging of the lines between various collection management and technical
service functions. The new title reflects the entire range of technical
services and collection management topics already being covered by the
journal. Over the past five volumes, we have seen a clear shift in content.
Although volume 18 (1994) included thirty-five papers in
acquisitions/serials and collection management, that same volume included 17
articles on a variety of other topics. That changing pattern of papers has
continued in subsequent volumes. =20
I am also pleased to announce the availability of a web page for
_Library Collections, Acquisitions, and Technical Services_.
The web page resides at
Elsevier and can be reached at the following address:
http://www.elsevier.nl:80/inca/publications/store/2/9/3/
It includes information in the following areas:
Product information
Aims and scope

1999 Research Award

Dispatch Dates
I look forward to continuing this expanded content with a journal title
that more accurately reflects the content and purpose of the journal. As
_LAPT's_ first editor, Scott Bullard, stated in an editorial in 1983:
"We believe we can realize our primary objective, providing information
which will help ... librarians perform their duties more effectively,
only if we grow and change right along with the profession.
I encourage all our readers to let us know how we can serve your
needs even better than in the
past."
