Indiana University Libraries, Bloomington Head, Cataloging Division Technical Services at the Indiana University Libraries is in the process of a major reorganization that will merge three existing departments into a single Technical Services Department with parallel Acquisitions and Cataloging Divisions. The new Cataloging Division will comprise a major Western Languages Cataloging Section and an Area Studies Section. The Head of the Cataloging Division and the Head of the Acquisitions Division, together with their Section Heads, will constitute the senior management team of the Department and report to the Director of Technical Services. AVAILABLE: November 1, 1998 RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Director of Technical Services, the Head of the Cataloging Division will lead a staff of approximately 50 FTE involved in all aspects of cataloging for the Main Library and Campus Libraries in Bloomington. Will directly oversee Section Heads involved in Database Management; Western Languages and Area Studies cataloging; and Physical Processing; and will collaborate with the Head of the Acquisitions division in responsibility for FastCat processing. Will develop and implement cataloging policy within a consensus environment encompassing Main and Campus public services units; bibliographers and subject area specialists; and Cataloging Division staff. Will provide leadership in operational aspects of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging on all levels, including BIBCO, CONSER, and NACO. Will collaborate with the Director and the Head of Acquisitions and departmental technology specialists in analyzing and establishing new workflows to capitalize on automation developments. Will foster and implement initiatives in technical services workstations and use of the Libraries' ILS for expedited processing of materials. Will study and establish qualitative and quantitative standards for productivity and performance for all staff in Technical Services on both individual and departmental leavels, including monitoring use of Core Level cataloging to assess its effectiveness. Will investigate new means of obtaining and exchanging biliographic information, including MARC data, from vendors and other suppliers of bibliographic information. Will serve as a departmental resource on metadata and its application in the University. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA-accredited master's degree in library science, or equivalent combination of education and experience in an academic library; demonstrated experience in one or more aspects of cataloging, preferably in more than a single academic library setting; significant involvement and understanding of current issues affecting cataloging on the national and international level; broad knowledge of trends in technical services automation on both local and national levels; excellent written and oral communication and analytical skills; demonstrated skill and experience in supervising librarians, professionals, and support staff; good interpersonal skills and the ability to participate as a member of the departmental management team and to direct the work of the cataloging teams; extensive experience with bibliographic utilities (OCLC, RLIN) and desktop utilities (Excel, Access). Preferred: MLS; experience with cataloging components of integrated library systems, particularly the NOTIS system, as well as knowledge of developments in new generation of local systems; familiarity with automated authority control processes and vendors and their application to local systems; experience in working with book vendors or bibliographic utilities in establishing shelf-ready/catalog-ready workflows; demonstrated record in pursuing creative solutions to library problems. SALARY AND BENFITS: Salary negotiable and competitive, dependent upon experience, qualifications, and rank. Rank will be either Associate Librarian or Librarian. This is a tenure track academic appointment, which includes eligibility for sabbatical leaves.
