Topic: From On-line Catalog to Gateway: Opportunities and Impacts for
Technical Services

Presentations by:
Thomas Dowling, Assistant Director of Library Systems for Client/Server
Applications, Ohio/LINK
Larry Dixson, Senior Network Specialist in the Network Development and
MARC Standards Office, Library of Congress
Kathlin Ray, Head of Access Services, University of the Pacific

Such technological developments as the World Wide Web, Z39.50, and the
Internet are fueling the evolution of the on-line catalog to a gateway.
This evolution is impacting public service expectations for the on-line
catalog and is impacting technical services role in creating and
maintaining the catalog as a vital resource. Presenters will discuss these
developments and some of the resulting impacts.

During the second half of the meeting, a panel of librarians including Kit
Herlihy, CSU San Marcos, Susan Davis, SUNY Buffalo, and Olivia Madison,
Iowa State and attendees will have an opportunity to consider how
technical services operations are adapting in response to this evolution
and the direction in which we should be moving.
