POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ACQUISITIONS &
COORDINATOR OF ELECTRONIC RESOURCES

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Sterling C. Evans Library at Texas A&M University
seeks a librarian to assist the Director of Acquisitions in planning,
managing, and evaluating acquisitions processes and procedures. Has
primary responsibility for communications within the University
(including selectors in the libraries); with library administrators
dealing with consortial partners; and with vendors concerning digital
resources. Within the environment of electronic resources, responsible
for negotiating and monitoring vendor contracts, for maintaining records
of purchases, and for evaluating new and existing resources, user
levels, and platforms, as well as considering implications for
electronic journals.  Has secondary responsibility for the acquisition
of other library materials, including communication with library
selectors; and the preparation and monitoring of a library materials
budget of over $7,000,000.  Assists the Director of Acquisitions with
recruiting, training, supervising and evaluating 28 FTE library
paraprofessionals and additional student assistants.  Responsible for
the department in the absence of the director.  Maintains awareness of
current trends and issues in technical services.

REQUIREMENTS: A Master's Degree from an ALA accredited program or
equivalent is required.  (Equivalent is defined as a graduate degree
from a foreign library school comparable to U.S. ALA accredited schools.
 These schools are identified by the American Library Association).
Minimum of three years progressively responsible professional experience
in an academic or research library setting; knowledge of automated
bibliographic control or collection development experience; hands-on
experience with an integrated online library system; excellent written
and oral communication skills; commitment to enhancing public access to
library resources; strong service orientation; strong interpersonal
skills; ability to manage change and work in a team environment; and a
commitment to professional service, scholarship and potential for
meeting university promotion and tenure requirements.

PREFERRED: Substantial acquisitions experience in an academic library;
knowledge of MARC formats; successful experience supervising, training,
and coordinating workflow in a technical services library setting.

ENVIRONMENT:  A member of ARL, Evans Library is the University's
principal research and information center providing 2.5 million volumes,
3.6 million microforms and 13,000 current journals.  There is a total
staff of 238, including 65 librarians with full faculty status.
Librarians work in a sophisticated online environment utilizing NOTIS
and a full range of automated information retrieval services.  A
building expansion project is in development.

Founded in 1876, Texas A&M University has an enrollment of 43,000 making
it the third largest university in the nation.  An integral part of the
twin cities of Bryan and College Station, the University is situated
less than two hours from Houston and Austin.

BENEFITS & SALARY:  Salary: Minimum $33,500 for 12 months.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF CATALOGING &
HEAD, MONOGRAPHS COPY CATALOGING

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Sterling C. Evans Library, Texas A&M University
is seeking a librarian who will bring vision and energy to managing the
operations and staff involved in copy cataloging of monographic
materials.  The Assistant Director of Cataloging and Head of Monographs
Copy Cataloging must be committed to streamlining operations and
increasing productivity. The incumbent assists the Director of
Cataloging in designing cataloging  procedures, writing documentation,
and preparing statistical and written reports.  Has primary
responsibility for recruiting, training, supervising and evaluating a
minimum of 13 FTE library paraprofessionals performing all levels of
copy cataloging including some original cataloging and classification.
Works closely with other units performing related functions for other
types of resources and as departmental structure evolves, may also
assume direction of other functions such as database maintenance
activities, processing of state and federal documents and other
purchased cataloging initiatives.  Will be responsible for the
department in the absence of department head.  Performs some original
cataloging for a specified subject or category of material according to
national standards.  Stays abreast of current trends and issues in
technical services.  The Cataloging Department as a whole catalogs
approximately 45,000 new titles per year.

REQUIREMENTS:  Required: Master's degree from an ALA accredited program
or equivalent.  (Equivalent is defined as a graduate degree from a
foreign library school comparable to U.S. ALA accredited schools.  These
schools are identified by the American Library Association).  Minimum of
three years progressively responsible professional experience in an
academic or research library setting; strong knowledge of principles of
cataloging and the structure and function of automated catalogs;
substantial experience as a cataloger in an academic library, including
experience with original cataloging;  ability to manage change and work
in a team environment; strong knowledge of AACR2r, Library of Congress
Rule Interpretations, Library of Congress classification and subject
heading schemes, MARC formats, automated bibliographic control systems;
commitment to enhancing public access to library resources and
cooperative cataloging efforts;  excellent written and oral
communication skills; strong service orientation; and a commitment to
professional service, scholarship and ability to meet university
promotion and tenure requirements.

PREFERRED: Successful experience supervising, training and coordinating
cataloging staff; catalog maintenance experience; experience with and
understanding of earlier descriptive and subject cataloging practices;
NACO experience; NOTIS or other integrated library system experience.
