Holdings format coding question Jane Murray 10 Apr 1998 17:02 UTC

This is a question for anyone using USMARC Holdings Format and is
cross-posted to several lists; please forgive any duplication.

When you own a complete run of a periodical title, but the holdings
are split among several collections and are recorded on separate
holdings records, do you code the "completeness" data element
(character 16 of the 008) to represent the institution's overall
holdings, or just the holdings recorded on the individual record?

For example, in our DRA system, we have separate location codes for
our oversized and regular-sized periodical titles. If we own 100% of
a given title, but record half of the run on the record for oversize
material, and the rest of it on the record for normal-size material,
should we code each record's "completeness" with a value of 1, or
with a value of 2?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
