I work at a college that utilizes many technical journals. In order to
keep track of usage, a survey is done every morning. On the second floor
are kept the current journals, on the first floor journals from 1990 to
current and on the ground floor, journals before 1990. Each morning two
students are responsible for shelving all journals that were used since
the previous day's shelving, and counting each on a checklist. Once a week
this information is entered into Access. Once a year journals are chosen
to be cut based on this information about usage. Some of the older
journals are housed in another building based on low usage and are
retrieved by a member of the reference staff. Hope this helps.
