Acquiring Electronic Journals - The Role of Vendors
New Orleans Convention Center, room 85
Saturday, January 10th from 9:30 to 11:00
In the traditional print world, serial subscription vendors provide
services to libraries including ordering, claiming, reports and issuing one
invoice for a library's multiple subscriptions. The benefits of these
services to libraries is understood by the library community. As journal
collections evolve into a combination of print and electronic, the benefits
of using a vendor for acquiring electronic journals is less certain. While
acquiring electronic journals shares some similarities with paper journals,
such as paying a subscription, the differences are significant. Electronic
journals require license agreements and verification of certified users,
are often not checked in or claimed, and are sometimes paid from a
different portion of the library's materials budget than their paper
counterparts. What role does or should the serial subscription vendor play
in this new arena that is mutually beneficial to the library, the vendor
and the publisher?
