Fritz Schwartz Biography
Frederick E. "Fritz" Schwartz was a tireless proponent of standard electronic
data interchange (EDI) in the serials publishing industry. His firmly-held
beliefs regarding the conduct of business in the industry received widespread
support. He actively participated in international, national, and industry
groups that sought to automate the exchange of business documents in standard
machine-readable formats. Among these groups were ALA, ANSI ASC X12, ICEDIS,
ISO, NASIG, NISO, and SISAC.
Fritz received his bachelor's degree in anthropology from the University of
Pennsylvania, and worked as a para-professional in the library system there
before taking his master's degree from Drexel. During his career he held
management positions at CLSI and the Faxon Company, and was well known for
his creative presentations at conferences in the library and publishing
communities. Fritz was interested in serials automation in general, and was
intrigued by the possibilities the Internet offered.
A multi-faceted person, Fritz was a voracious reader, a critical thinker,
someone who studied society. He was an author, a teacher, and a magnanimous
colleague. We remember him as a connoisseur of the life of the mind and the
spirit. Fritz Schwartz passed away in November 1995. His energetic
character is remembered through this joint NASIG/SISAC memorial.
