Subject: Temporary binding

Good morning,
For the last fifteen years or so we've been using a Thermabind machine
to bind periodical issues which we intend to retain for a limited period
only. Most of these "temp bound" volumes are kept for two to five years,
although a few may be retained longer. We've been using the same machine
throughout this entire period, but now it's beginning to malfunction.
Before we order a newer model from the same company, I'd be interested in
hearing from others who also bind current periodical issues in-house. My
specific questions are:

1) Are there other inexpensive methods of binding issues which will be
retained for a short period? I'm interested in binding methods which can be
carried out in-house by student employees and which will not involve
punching holes or otherwise damaging the text block.

2) For those libraries who are also using "perfect binding" equipment like
the machine we now have, what model(s) are you using? How long have you had
the machine? Are you satisfied with it?

Please respond to me directly at weissert@lafayette.edu. Thank you in
advance.
