THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES 1858 Neil Avenue Mall Columbus, Ohio 43210-1286 Position: Coordinator, Serials Cataloging Section Available: 1 April 1998 Responsibilities: Manages the Serials Cataloging Section; develops and implements priorities, work flows and procedures for serials cataloging in all formats including electronic resources; participates in Department and library-wide forums on creating access to electronic resources; serves as liaison with the Continuation Acquisitions Division, collection managers and others throughout the Libraries; contributes authority records through participation in NACO. Keeps abreast of cataloging trends, participates in national discussions (AUTOCAT, SERIALST); evaluates the potential use of new services and technologies; will advise the Department on future CONSER participation. Collaborates with library staff in developing the organizing principles and logical arrangement of the Department and Libraries' web site. Participates actively as a management team member in Department planning, policy-making and operations; supervises three staff members and students assistants. Reports to the head of the Cataloging Department. Serves on appropriate library, university and professional committees. Librarians have faculty status and are expected to meet University requirements for promotion and tenure, including research, publication and service. Department: The Cataloging Department is a dynamic and forward-looking department committed to creating timely, accurate and full bibliographic access to library-provided resources. The staff consists of 5.5 FTE librarians, 16 FTE support staff, 4 FTE graduate assistants and 10,000 hours of student assistant time. The Department's four sections - Western Languages, Non-Roman Languages, Serials Cataloging and Catalog Maintenance/Authorities - perform original cataloging in all languages, formats and bibliographic levels of new and existing resources as well as the copy cataloging in non-Roman languages for the University Libraries. The Department manages the four retrospective conversion projects, coordinates participation in NACO, provides training throughout the Libraries on cataloging and catalog maintenance functions and has established a web page in support of these activities. The processing of new books and serials with full bibliographic records is done in the Acquisition Department. There is a separate cataloging department for special collections resources. Music scores and sound recordings are cataloged by the Music Library, which also does the original cataloging of monographs. Qualifications: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program; minimum of 2 years relevant experience; knowledge of metadata and other standards, including AACR2r, LC subject headings and classification, USMARC formats, CONSER procedures, and newer standards such as Dublin Core, HTML, SGML, and TEI. Demonstrated management and supervisory abilities; reading knowledge of one foreign language; experience with Internet and PC software packages, a local online system and bibliographic utilities; strong communication, organizational and training skills; demonstrated analytical skills; ability to work flexibly and creatively in a rapidly changing environment and accept new challenges; ability to set and adjust priorities to realize department and library goals; and ability to work independently as well as part of a= team. Salary and Rank: $32,000 minimum. Faculty rank and salary dependent upon experience and qualifications. Benefits: 22 days vacation, 15 days sick leave, 10 holidays.
