in particular about URLs, URNs, PURLs, SICIs and DOIs (digital object
identifiers), take a look at an article by Clifford Lynch which is mounted
on the ARL Web site: "Identifiers and Their Role in Networked Information
Applications."  There are links to several related sources of information,
including "Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) and Clifford Lynch's Five
Questions on Identifiers," by Bill Arms from CNRI (The Corporation for
National Research Intiatives).  Excellent reading for serialists who are
interested in standards and identifiers!
