American University Library seeks a full-time Serials Record Specialist in
the Serials Department. Self-direction, attention to detail, and good
communication and follow-up skills are essential.
The Serials Record Specialist (SRS) is responsible for maintaing a check-in
database of about 3,000 titles. The Serials Record Specialist checks-in
about 30,000 issues per year and 20,000 pieces of microfiche, and generates
and follows-up on 1,600 claims per year. The SRS uses Innopac (soon
Voyager) extensively every day, QuattroPro for statistics, and the Internet
to send claims. Duties also include collecting mail from the receiving
room, opening and sorting it; identifying title changes, changes in
frequency and numbering and updating the individual records to maintain the
accuracy of the predictive check-in system; and assisting with departmental
tasks as needed.
Required Qualifications: Two years of college OR an equivalent combination
of education and related experience that demonstrates the necessary skills
and abilities for the position. Experience using computers in applications
such as word processing, database management, and spreadsheets. Ability to
work with minimal supervision after initial training. Accuracy and
attention to detail (in print and on screen) essential.
Preferred: One year of library experience, preferably working with
periodicals. Knowledge of Innopac and/or other automated library systems.
Good command of the English language; ability to distinguish among foreign
languages. Internet navigating skills. Ability to recognize and solve
problems. Strong service orientation. Strong organizational, interpersonal
and communication skills.

The wage is $10.56/hour. The work week is 35 hours.
