Dalhousie Review Jeff Steely 08 Oct 1997 12:51 UTC

SERIALSTers,

Greetings from rainy (hooray!) Waco (it's been a long, dry summer).

Now for some news from Canada. Call off the funeral. It seems that the
_Dalhousie Review_, age 75, will not die as predicted. Please read the
letter I wrote to the new editor and his reply.

On 10/7/97 I wrote:
------------------------------------------
Dear Dr. Ronald Huebert,

We just received vol.75, no.3, of _Dalhousie Review_. We had been
informed by our subscription agency, EBSCO, that this would be the last
issue of this title.
I read through the three page editorial that, until the second to last
paragraph, also seemed to indicate that _Dalhousie Review_ was coming to
an end. Then Alan Andrews writes that "...it is gratifying to be able to
report that the _Review_ is to be revived in a NEW GUISE (emphasis mine),
under the auspices...."

What does this mean? Will the new publication still be called _Dalhousie
Review_? What will be the frequency of the "new" title?

These kinds of ambiguous publication changes create havoc for libraries.
I will be glad to pass on to EBSCO and to SERIALST (the primary listserv
for serial librarians) any information you can give me. I would suggest,
however, that you contact major periodical vendors and all of your past
subscribers detailing your plans for this periodical. This will help all
of us and will help prevent erosion from your subscription list.

Sincerely,
Jeff Steely

And here is Dr. Huebert's reply:

Dear Mr. Steely,

As the new editor of the Dalhousie Review I can assure you that we will
continue publishing, under the same title, the same number of issues each
year (that is, three issues). There will be no increase in cost to
subscribers.

There will be a great many changes in design, in content, and in emphasis.
But we are not throwing away 75 years of tradition. The journal will
continue to carry fiction, poetry, and critical/scholarly work of a kind
that will appeal to a broad readership, not just to specialists in a
single discipline. The major change I anticipate is that the new
Dalhousie Review will be MUCH BETTER than it has been for several years.
And with a little bit of time to work with, I promise you that we will be
up-to-date and on time with our deliveries. Not everything will happen at
once, but you watch and see. There are opportunities for this journal
that have not been taken in the recent past.

I'm trying to get this message out to our subscribers as quickly as I can,
and you're right to warn me that the need to do so is urgent. Thanks for
your message. There's somebody now in control of things. Spread the
word.

Yours truly,
Ronald Huebert
