         CONSER DOCUMENTATION NEWLY UPDATED ON THE WEB

_CONSER Cataloging Manual_, Module 31, "Remote Access Computer
File Serials," is now fully updated to reflect the prevalence of
the World Wide Web for accessing online serials and to include
new practices for online serials. The HTML version of the module
is a CONSER Web page on the LC Web site at the following address:

     http://www.loc.gov/acq/conser/issues.html

Several sections were rewritten and record examples were added to
reflect the current Internet environment. The new cataloging
practices for online serials were recently developed by the
CONSER Operations Committee. Identification of the extent of
issues available online (field 362) and the issue on which the
description is based (field 500) can both be enhanced by
recording the date that the serial was viewed for cataloging.

Print copies of CONSER documentation updates are issued by LC's
Cataloging Distribution Service. For details on ordering and
availability, please contact: Library of Congress, Cataloging
Distribution Service, Customer Services Section/Dept. W,
Washington, DC, 20541-5017; cdsinfo@mail.loc.gov (email);
