                             SERIALS CATALOGER

The Catalog Department of the University of California, Irvine, Libraries,
is seeking a Serials Cataloger to perform all aspects of serials
cataloging, with specific responsibility for cataloging electronic
publications.  The incumbent follows current national standards for
bibliographic description, authority work, and subject analysis, and
ensures that quality bibliographic records are created through OCLC to be
included in the local OPAC (ANTPAC) and UC systemwide (MELVYL) databases.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

(1) perform original and complex copy cataloging for all types of
        serials with specific responsibility for electronic publications;

(2) coordinate distribution of serials materials to be cataloged among
        members of the team;

(3) maintain and organize the serials cataloging backlog;

(4) communicate with bibliographers and other library staff in
        answering inquiries and resolving serials bibliographic problems;

(5) assist the team leader in documenting local cataloging procedures;

(6) keep abreast of the latest trends and developments in serials
        cataloging, for example, cataloging standards and library
        automation systems;

(7) maintain proficiency in Libraries' Enterprise-wide network system,
        including e-mail, web browsers, word processing, and other standard
        applications;

(8) other duties and projects as assigned.

REQUIRED:

(1) graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited
        institution;

(2) recent serials cataloging experience using bibliographic
        utilities and integrated online library systems;

(3) knowledge of and working experience with AACR2r, national serials
        cataloging standards (CONSER), LCRIs, MARC formats and Library of
        Congress subject headings and classification system;

(4) ability to work cooperatively, effectively, flexibly, and
        independently in a culturally diverse team-based environment;

(5) ability to work quickly and accurately in a production oriented
        environment;

(6) excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills;

(7) strong analytical skills to resolve complex problems.

PREFERRED:

(1) experience in cataloging electronic resources;

(2) ability to catalog serials in one or more European languages, i.e.,
        French, German, Italian, or Spanish.

Desirable:

(1) knowledge of and working experience with National Library of Medicine
        subject headings and classification systems;

(2) experience with OCLC and Innovative Interfaces, Inc. systems.

THE CATALOG DEPARTMENT

The Catalog Department is responsible for cataloging approximately 30,000
items annually including monographs, serials, AV, music, computer files,
electronic resources, and government publications for all subjects and
languages.  Including the Department Head, the staff includes 6
librarians, 19 full-time library assistants and a varying number of
student assistants.  The Department consists of five sections:  Monograph
Cataloging, Maintenance, East Asian, Multimedia, and Serials.  The
Department uses OCLC for cataloging and the Innovative Interfaces Inc.
system as the library's OPAC.  Current projects include cataloging of
government publications, internet resources, investigation of "fast cat",
and the development of the cataloger's workstation.

THE LIBRARIES

The UCI Libraries consist of the Main Library, the Science Library, and
the Medical Center Library.  The Main Library, which underwent a major
renovation in 1996, primarily serves the Schools of Humanities, Arts,
Social Sciences, and Social Ecology, the Graduate School of Management,
the Department of Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies.  The Science
Library, which opened in 1994, consolidating several branches, primarily
serves the College of Medicine and the Schools of Biological Sciences,
Physical Sciences, Engineering, and the Department of Information and
Computer Science.  The Medical Center Library serves the Medical Center
located 12 miles from the main campus.

The UCI Libraries recently implemented a new organizational structure
which more effectively aligns the Libraries' activities with current and
future needs and which includes the use of teams in conjunction with
departments.  The Libraries' collection, supported by a budget of $4.5
million, consists of approximately 1.9 million volumes and 19,000 current
serial titles as well as a substantial microform collection. In addition
to the local INNOPAC integrated library system, the Libraries participate
in the University of California Melvyl(R) System.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, IRVINE

One of nine University of California campuses, the University of
California, Irvine, is nestled in 1,489 acres of coastal foothills, five
miles from the Pacific Ocean between San Diego and Los Angeles.  The
present enrollment is 17,092 students with a faculty of approximately
1,000 including the Medical School.  The current student population
numbers 13,833 undergraduates, 2,277 graduate students, and 1,171 health
sciences students.  Ethnic/minority students represent about 70% of the
student body.  The University offers 29 doctoral programs in addition to
the M.D.

Candidates for appointment in the University of California Librarian
Series must have a professional background of competence, knowledge, and
experience to assure suitability for appointment.  Librarians at the
University of California, Irvine are academic appointees and receive
potential career status at the time of their initial appointment.
Librarians are periodically subject to peer review for merit increase
based on the following criteria: 1) professional competence and quality of
service within the Libraries; 2) professional activity outside the
Libraries;  3) university and public service; and 4) research and other
activity.  They are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, one
day per month sick leave, reductions in incidental fees, and all other
perquisites granted to non-faculty academic personnel. The University has
an excellent retirement system and sponsors a variety of group life and
health insurance plans.  Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of
salary.

SALARY:  commensurate with qualifications and experience within a range of
$31,032 - 34,188 (Assistant Librarian I-III).
