report on use of e-resources Steve Oberg 18 Aug 1997 22:00 UTC

At the University of Chicago Library, a technical services work group has
developed a report which attempts to set guidelines for effective and
appropriate use of electronic resources. An HTML version of the report of
the work group has been made publicly available for those who are
interested, via this URL:

     http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/Annex/

The report builds on similar documents developed at the Library of Congress
and at SUNY Buffalo, as well as policies already in place at the University
of Chicago (see part III. University Policies and Other Resources in the
report for links to these documents). Its development has been prompted by
a sharp increase within technical services in the utilization of and
reliance upon networked and desktop-PC based e-resources, which in turn has
largely been driven by installation of multi-purpose Pentium workstations
over the past year.

Note that the report is primarily intended as an internal document to be
applied to staff in the Technical Services Division of the Library. Also
note that it is a working draft, implemented with the intent of obtaining
more experience with application of the guidelines in day-to-day work. It
will be subject to updates as we gain this experience over a period of
several months.

Your comments or questions are welcome.
