Re: "C.D. Thompson" <cathompson@UPS.EDU's message, Subject: Microfiche Title
Problem - Journal of Sedimentary Research
>>>>We recently received UMI microfiche for Journal of Sedimentary Research.
The heading on each piece of mfiche is: Journal of Sedimentary Research.
Section A, Sedimentary Petrology and Processes. But, this journal actually
alternates with Section A then Section B for the next issue. The title on
the microfiche is misleading. I would have thought it should have been
labeled simply: Journal of Sedimentary Research without the confusing
additional alternating title. We have it cataloged as: Journal of
Sedimentary Research which causes confusion for checking-in, our holdings
and shelving. I'm not a cataloger.<<<<
>>>>How do other libraries handle this for filing purposes? Do you file it as
it is labeled on the microfiche? Then state in your holdings that this is
"Shelved As" other title? Or, do you relabel the envelope the mfiche is
in...<<<
one reply was:
>>>In your case, we would have the primary title card read Journal of
Sedimentary Research A&B, and, if the microfiche holdings were a long
enough run to create a visual separation in the drawers making it
necessary, we would have separate cross-reference cards for A and for B
which would be placed at the end of the run. This would get the
researcher to the fiche wanted, and keep the fiche filers putting them
where they belong. Bud Sonka, Serials Unit Supervisor, National University
Library System<<<<<<<<
However, the situation is as follows:
Journal of sedimentary petrology. - Vol. 1 (1931)-vol. 63, no. 6 (1993).
Split into: Journal of sedimentary research. Section A, Sedimentary petrology
(issn 1073-130x), and: Journal of sedimentary research. Section B,
Stratigraphy and global studies (issn 1073-1318).
Both these sections ran for 2 years only, numbered: vol. 64, no. 1 (1994)-
vol. 65, no. 4 (1995). Then they merged to form:
Journal of sedimentary research. - Vol. 66, no. 1 (1996)-... (issn 1073.130x
(of the forerunner)).
As the numbering is continuous we would keep/have kept the vol. with the new
title filed under/on(?) the same callnumber.
For a microfiche set we would add a second holding to the relevant titles,
placing the microfiche on a 2nd callnumber. No need for notes: shelved as...
Hope this is helpful.
