Subject: Closed/open stacks
I have a variant of the question Nan Canington posed on Friday about open
stacks. Have any libraries, especially public ones, changed their
periodical collections from open stacks to closed (or vice versa)? Why?
What issues affected you? Our library is thinking about closing our
stacks primarily because of loss of materials. I am very alarmed about
this.
To answer Nan, yes, I have loads of trouble with missing and mutilated
issues. I scrounge to replace them; we have no money to buy them.
Backserv is the best thing that has happened to me, but it still doesn't
get nearly what I need.
