I also agree with those searching for alternative ways to stay current.
It's not only an issue of financing travel, it's also a staffing issue.
Who will mind the store when we're away?  (Do we/can we "close up the
shop" when we travel?) This dilemma cannot be improved with solely the
traditional meetings.  Although the traditional meeting/program has it's
place, emerging technologies and staffing cutbacks necessitates searching
for alternatives.  I think that this institute is as good a place as any
to start addressing the bigger problem of library continuing education in
all areas of librarianship.  I'm in favor of teleconferencing and
videotaping.  Both aren't nearly as good as attendance, but are better
than nothing!

(Just my 2-cents worth on a Friday morning!)
