I would actually be very interested in hearing from institutions where the
opposite has been studied and/or implemented: i.e. converting periodicals
(bound and/or current) from a classified arrangement to an alphabetical
arrangement.

This a frequent request from some of our faculty.  We arrange current and
bound periodicals by classification number.  Current periodicals are
shelved in 2 separate areas (one for science periodicals, the other for
social science/humanities).  Bound periodicals are shelved in the main
stacks.

I am presently studying this issue, chiefly for the purpose of putting a
price tag on the operation (if we were to do it) so that the library can
present this figure to the faculty together with all the other pros and
cons of alphabetical arrangement of periodicals when this issue is
discussed with them.

Any tips on how to measure/predict the cost of such an operation (in
either direction I guess) would be very welcome.
