As I'm no longer up on the serials dept. floor, I don't know what the
current policy is -- but we have posted many copies (in large print!) of
the pertinent law concerning defacing library materials. I know that in
the past, we've called the University police, who do arrest the person
for defacement/destruction of property; we charge for replacement of the
entire volume, binding (if necessary), plus a pretty hefty fine. After
that, they have to go to court and end up either paying a fine or
spending time in jail.

One woman was caught slicing out articles with a razor blade; although
the police even found the razor blade in her handbag, she insisted that
the articles had ALREADY been sliced out, and so she was simply
"borrowing" them! Providential, to find absolutely all the articles she
needed for her paper already cut out and waiting for her, no?

She was also wanted for the destruction of public library materials ....
