Subject: Defacement of Serials
We are considering changing our fines policy to include an extra penalty
over and above our "face value plus $5 processing fee" when the periodical
has been intentionally defaced. Our biggest problem comes from students in
one class who are told to attach a "copy" of the article they used with
their assignment. Somehow, every semester several students either decide to
avoid the copying cost or hope for extra credit by attaching the original
article. Despite the fact that the instructor has explained to them that
cutting articles out of library periodicals is not acceptable, they do it
anyway. I would like to know if other libraries have different fines for
materials which are simply lost or accidentally damaged, as opposed to
intentionally defaced. Thank you in advance. Please respond to
