Serials Management and Receiving Unit Head (Rank:Librarian II)
Technical Services Department
University of North Texas Libraries
The University of North Texas Libraries seek an experienced serials
librarian to serve as Head, Serials Management and Receiving Unit.
Position Summary: Reporting to the Head of the Technical Services
Department, the Head of the Serials Management and Receiving Unit
oversees the activities of the unit (5 FTE and several student
assistants) responsible for the acquisition of non-depository serials,
their fiscal control, and attendant record maintenance (check-in,
claiming, cancellation projects, etc.) and the receipt of monographs
and distribution of the mail, in a highly automated environment.
Monitors, analyzes, and reports vendor performance. Works closely with
the Electronic Information Resources Committee (EIRC) and the Head of
Technical Services in the acquisitions/licensing process of electronic
resources. Participates in appropriate collection development
activities as a library liaison to an academic department.
Position responsibilities: plans, sets goals and priorities,
formulates policies, designs and monitors workflows, and provides
leadership, especially in the area of electronic serials. Also
trains, develops, supervises, and evaluates staff. Prepares
administrative and statistical reports, including serials cost
projections. Keeps abreast of current trends, standards, and
developments in the industry regarding vendor-developed services,
electronic resources, automated systems, and the publishing industry.
Qualifications:
Required: Masters' Degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA
accredited institution, 3 years professional experience in an
academic/research library, with at least 2 years in serials management
in an automated environment. Familiarity with the serials trade, with
current trends in serials management and control, and with national
standards for serials holdings. Experience with bibliographic
utilities, preferably OCLC, and with automated serials and
acquisitions systems (preferably Innovative Interfaces). Knowledge of
MARC formats. Demonstrated supervisory and management experience,
strong and effective training and problem-solving-skills. Excellent
oral and written communications skills. Evidence of initiative,
flexibility, and ability to work creatively in a rapidly changing
environment. Record of service orientation. Interest in personal
scholarly achievement and professional development.
Highly Desired: Experience with electronic journals (acquisitions,
licensing, processing, archiving, etc.) and with various software
packages (word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, etc.). A second,
subject Master's Degree.
Salary/Benefits/Appointment: Hiring at the Rank of Librarian II,
minimum salary: $30,000, 12 month contract. Usual benefits, a choice
of retirement plans, including TIAA/CREF. Texas has no state income
tax.
