ASSOCIATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN FOR TECHNICAL SERVICES

The University of Oregon Library invites applications and nominations for
the position of Associate University Librarian for Technical Services. The
University of Oregon is an ARL library which serves over 17,000
undergraduate and graduate students and 760 full-time and 430 part-time
faculty members. Its two million volume collection serves as an important
research facility for scholars throughout the Northwest. The Library uses
the InnoPac integrated system for all its operations, participates in
OCLC, NACO and SACO, and is host site to Orbis, the Oregon union catalog
representing the holdings of twelve colleges and universities in Oregon
and Washington. The Knight Library (main library) recently was expanded
and renovated, and includes a state-of-the-art electronic classroom and a
fully equipped information technology center. Current and on-going
projects involving Technical Services include: expanding electronic
holdings, development of a digital library initiative, preservation
program development, completion of retrospective conversion, U.S.
Newspaper Project: Oregon, and follow-up and implementation of an ARL
Technical Services Self- Study conducted in 1995.

As a member of Library Administration, the successful candidate will
contribute to the continued evolution and growth of the library. He/she
will serve as advisor to the Technical Services Department Heads in
problem resolution, setting goals, and in establishing priorities to guide
the division into the 21st Century. He/she will take a leadership role in
developing technical services initiatives, working with the Library
Administration and Technical Services staff to bring these initiatives to
reality.

RESPONSIBILITIES: overall administration and provision of visionary
leadership for technical services, which includes: Acquisitions, Serials,
Catalog, Preservation & Binding, and Interlibrary Loan, with 12.25 FTE
professional librarians, 2.0 FTE faculty supervisors (Officers of
Administration, non-ranked), 47.75 FTE support staff, plus student
assistants. Technical Services departments are closely integrated,
dynamic, highly collaborative and cooperative, and function interactively
with other divisions, including Public Services, Systems, and Collection
Development. The individual in this position needs to be flexible and
decisive in a complex, rapidly moving organizational setting. The
successful candidate will work in close collaboration with other members
of Library Administration, which consists of three AULs and the University
Librarian, in making budgetary and personnel policy decisions; and
development, implementation, and evaluation of library programs and
services. As a member of Library Administration, this position regularly
provides library representation at the campus, state, regional and
national levels.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA-accredited MLS degree; six years post-MLS
progressively responsible library technical services leadership/management
experience in an academic or research library; strong collaborative and
collegial skills; demonstrated planning skills; demonstrated creativity in
the application of technology to library programs and services; the
ability to transform vision into reality; experience with a national
bibliographic utility and familiarity with integrated library systems;
superior oral and written communication skills; substantial record of
contribution to the profession; commitment to excellence in service; and
excellent interpersonal skills. Preferred: additional graduate degree.

SALARY: $60,000 minimum. Appointment beyond the minimum salary will be
dependent upon qualifications, prior experience, and academic rank.

EMPLOYMENT: Librarians have faculty status and privileges, academic rank
(Assistant Professor-Professor), and are non-tenure track, with
fixed-term, renewable contracts (two or three years, depending on rank).
Professional growth and service in keeping with university and library
standards for promotion and retention is expected.
