Subject: Re: Bibliographic records for IAC full-text journals (Eleanor Cook)
The University of California libraries are doing a cooperative project to
add the IAC titles (and also ABI-Inform) to the statewide catalog. We
download the print record from OCLC (without adding a holdings symbol,
which OCLC said was OK in these circumstances) and then give the location
as the database name (e.g., ABI) with a note "Selected article text
online." The Melvyl catalog has a message to see an "explain" screen
for new users to find out how to access the information. The Division of
Library Automation was able to generate a list for us of the issues that
have full-text, so we are able to "holdings" statements to the records.
(ABI sends a nice list of coverage without changes and updates noted but
the IAC had to be generated). It is true that not all articles are
included, plus illustrations, equations, etc., may be missing: that's why
the bibliographers asked for the note about "Selected article text" (the
"holdings" list is available on the web should anyone want to do a
similar project -- it sure beats trying to figure out the coverage
title-by-title).
The idea of sharing records is attractive to some extent, except that we
do not want to put in "duplicate" records when we also own the print, so
if we could acquire a file of the records (a la Major Micros), we'd want
to dedup it against our paper holdings. At this time, the overlap of
print and full-text is very high for us. Your caution is appropriate,
however, in terms of not regarding the full-text as a substitute for
paper. The coverage is incomplete, titles tend to come and go, and if
your contract is like ours, IAC has no obligation to continue making the
titles available in full-text.
We were able to do this project quickly because we have PRISM and our
clever staff wrote
macros to search by ISSN, create holdings records with macros, etc.
