Subject: Periodical Budgeting

Hi to all you lucky people who work with Serials!

Our library has a collection of approximately 2,800 paid subscriptions to
what we term "periodicals".  At the present time we have one fund for
these subscriptions and do _not_ divide the funds by subject areas.
However, our library director is entertaining the thought of allocating
periodical funds to specific subject areas within departments--either in
combination with their monograph allocations or as a separate amount.

I would like to know others' experiences with these methods--the good,
the bad and the ugly!  I have some serious misgivings, but would like to
hear from others before I rush to judgment.
