Binghamton University seeks to fill a library faculty position
for the Glenn G. Bartle library. Bartle Library houses materials
in the social sciences, arts, humanities, management,
mathematics, computer science, education and human development.
HEAD OF CATALOGING SERVICES
DESCRIPTION: Binghamton University Libraries is seeking a
librarian to manage and lead the Unit consisting of 3.5 faculty,
4.75 professional, and 3 classified services staff. The
operations and projects of the Unit include original and adjusted
cataloging, authorities, and government documents records
processing using OCLC, RLIN, and Marcive with a local NOTIS
system. Working closely with the staff of the Unit, the Head
establishes goals and priorities; reviews and develops policies
and procedures; assumes a leadership role in work flow and
project assessment, analysis, and development; promotes effective
change and innovation in an automated unit; encourages
communication and teamwork; provides training and opportunities
for staff development. The successful candidate works with the
other Technical Services managers as well as public service units
to deliver a high level of quality service to the Binghamton
community. Reports to the Assistant Director for Technical
Services.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: MLS degree from an ALA accredited
institution; demonstrated increasingly responsible managerial
experience involving all levels of staff in Technical Services in
an academic or research library; excellent planning, leadership,
communication, and interpersonal skills; direct knowledge of and
experience in cataloging including various Western European
languages, USMARC bibliographic and authority formats, LC
classification, LCSH, AACR2, and authority control in an academic
or research library; extensive experience with a major
bibliographic utility and an automated system including an online
catalog; ability to foster change and work with others in a team
environment; knowledge of current trends in cataloging,
automation, and technical services; evidence of professional
growth, service activities, and contribution to the library
profession to meet faculty criteria for promotion and tenure; a
commitment to providing a high level of support service.
Preferred: Advanced degree; direct knowledge of and/or
experience in cataloging electronic and Web resources, experience
with system migration; experience with spreadsheets and other
software packages.
COMPENSATION: Minimum starting salary $38,000, plus excellent
fringe benefits including TIAA/CREF. Appointment at Senior
Assistant Librarian rank.
