Academe Today Roberta Winjum 19 Apr 1997 00:12 UTC

We recently discovered that _Academe Today_, the on-line version of the
_Chronicle of Higher Education_, was requiring us to register as a single
subscriber, password required, rather than the institution-wide free
access we'd previously enjoyed. Supposedly, only one person is now allowed
to access the on-line version in our library.

This is a very popular journal in our collection. I wrote a message to the
Chronicle asking for explanation. Their reply was (greatly simplified)
that they couldn't afford to provide institution-wide access for the price
of a single paper subscription. Understandable, I suppose, but very
disappointing.

I don't think it's currently possible to subscribe to _Academe Today_
separately from the _Chronicle_.

I see links to _Academe Today_ on lots of academic library web pages. Can
anyone give me advice on what you've done? Do some of you SERIALST'ers
think there's something that could be done to get the _Chronicle_ to
reconsider this policy?

Thanks,
Roberta Winjum
