Circulating Periodicals to faculty Marie Respass 28 Apr 1997 15:42 UTC

We have been circulating paper issues (not bound) to faculty
on a three day basis. We have been doing this for about 2
years. There are a few faculty members that require
"reminders" several times in order to get the issues back.
However, the vast majority are responsible and appreciative
of the opportunity to take issues home to read. Further,
we feel this service has increased use of the periodicals by
our students. We have been extending a table of contents
service to our faculty for a number of years. This will
hopefully be replaced as more faculty participate in our
UNCOVER/REVEAL site license. However, the T/C enables
faculty to know which issues are of particular interest. We
do not circulate any issues on display. However, they
represent a small percentage of the collection and are more
general in nature. New issues may be borrowed after two
weeks. That provides reasonable access to new issues for
all patrons. I think this service has worked well and has
substantially increased faculty use of our collection and
faculty support for our collection. We do not circulate
bound volumes for two reasons. First, a bound volume
contains too many issues to go out together and
secondly, by the time a title is bound it is also showing up
in our indexes. Student demand is therefore greater. By
the way, we haven't lost an issue yet.
