PERIODICALS/SERIALS SUPERVISOR
Technical Services/University Library (full-time)

DUTIES:  Under general supervision, maintains the Periodicals/Serials
Database which is used to produce a combined list of periodicals, serials
and newspapers for reference and patron use, as well as a variety of
title lists and survey information for use of bibliographers.

Organizes and directs workflow; monitors production/editing of 929/930's
and their contents; answers questions; and solves problems identified by
inputters.  Provides information regarding available products from
Per/Ser system; creates and prepares explanatory materials and examples
of prodcuts for distribution; accepts verbal and written requests for
special reports; and submits computer tape to vendor for hardcopy list
production.  Develops and maintains procedure manual for the Per/Ser
system; identifies, researches and resolves complex serials cataloging
and acquisitions problems, recatalogs serials that have ceased, changed
title or need revision; adapts OCLC records to reflect the items held
locally; and transmits complete bibliographic records from OCLC to GEAC.

Hires, trains, evaluates, and supervises students doing inputting/editing
on special projects.  Performs day-to-day processing of continuations,
which includes checking in materials on CHKM, preparing invoices,
revising records, and preparing materials for bindery or processing.
Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Equivalent to three years of progressively responsible
library clerical experience.  Completion of a four-year college program
for library assistants may be substituted for two years of experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SPECIALIZED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Working knowledge of:
library terminology; general bibliographic forms and structure; library
computer applications; and the activities, policies, procedures, and
organizational structure of the area to which the position is assigned.
General knowledge of computer applications in the library, the academic
library setting, the library's collection, the system under which library
materials are classified, and the catalog.  Ability and specialized
skills to: apply rules in accordance with policy, regulations, and
procedures under varying circumstances; provide standard information on
library policies and procedures to library users; work independently;
work cooperatively with others; read and write English at a level
appropriate to this position; work accurately with attention to detail;
use a typewriter and/or a word processor; interpret, modify, and verify
library records within established rules and procedures; understand and
operate library computer systems; understand, interpret, and apply
library rules and bibliographic standards; and use discretion in applying
rules, regulations and procedures.  Desirable qualifications include
experience with OCLC Marc serials format and union listing module; GEAC
Acquisitions and Marc Record Management Systems or GEAC Advance systems;
serials check-in and cataloging; and IBM PC and Windows.

SALARY RANGE:  $2352-2816 mo.
