Subject: MLS vs non-MLS staff

We are a relatively small library (28-30 full-time, 30+ student
assistants) and are interested in the makeup of various other library
staffs. We currently have 13 librarians that have an MLS. The remainder
have either a batchelors degree or associate degree or simply a
high-school diploma. The persons who staff the reference desk have an
MLS, the ones who staff circulation have a batchelors degree and will be
(no one is in the position right now) supervised by a circulation manager
who also will hold a batchelors degree. Acquisitions/Serials and
cataloging have three MLS, three batchelors, one AS, and two high school
degrees.

When your library hires new staff members (other than reference), do you
require degrees, and what kind? Is there any kind of incentive for your
staff to further their education while on the job?

Thanks.
