                 State of Vermont Department of Libraries

                              STATE LIBRARIAN

The State of Vermont seeks to fill the position of State Librarian to provide
vision, leadership and coordination for diverse functions of the State
library agency and library services statewide.  The State Librarian reports
to the Secretary of Administration and is the administrative head of the
Department of Libraries which is responsible for providing library and
information services to the three branches of state government, to libraries
statewide, the judiciary, to the general public and to Vermonters with
special needs.  It also promotes excellence in local libraries through
training and technical assistance and fosters innovation in statewide
multi-type library cooperation and resource sharing among all types of
libraries.  The Department operates in a networked environment with a DRA
system and coordinates the multi-vendor Vermont Automated Libraries System
(VALS).

This position requires a master's degree in library science from an
ALA-accredited program.  Candidates will be expected to have at least five
years of progressively responsible library management experience as a
director of a major library system, responsible management experience in a
state library agency or a large public library or other similar related
professional experience.  Priority will be given to candidates having
experience with information technology and library networks.  Consensus
building skills and experience with the legislative process would be
beneficial.

Beginning annual salary, upper 50's plus benefits, commensurate with
experience.  The position, which will become vacant on November 1, 1997, is
appointed by the Secretary of Administration after consultation with the
Library Board.  It also requires approval of the Governor and the advice and
consent of the VT Senate.  The State of Vermont is an EEO/Affirmative Action
