When considering what to put on the spine of the bound volume of the
journal with the problem numbering, you may want to wait and see what
the indexes that cover that journal decide. We had a problem in which a
journal went several years without assigning any dates (including years)
to its issues. We made our best guess and bound accordingly. Then we
found out that the index that is used most by our patrons had made
different assumptions about the publication years for that journal. To
avoid confusing patrons, we ended up having the binder remove the years
from the spines of the affected bound volumes, leaving the volume
number, which was reliable.
