The Smithsonian Institution Libraries has announced a vacancy in the
Cataloging Services Department, Original Cataloging Section.

Catalog/Authorities Librarian

Environment: the Smithsonian Institution Libraries provide services that
support the research, curatorial, publication, exhibition, and public
service programs at the Institution.  The collections in art, history, and
science include 1.2 million items, 40,000 rare books, 15,000 journals, and
a unique collection of 285,000 trade catalogues.  Along with an online
catalog, access to national databases, and a CD-ROM database
searching center, services are available through a system of 18 library
locations in the Washington, D.C. area and at other facilities in the U.S.
and overseas.

Responsibilities: the incumbent serves as Catalog/Authorities Librarian
and is responsible for cataloging of SIL material for the local bibliographic
database, SIRIS, and for OCLC, an international bibliographic utility.
Coordinates cataloging authority control procedures for the Department,
including developing departmental policy for participation in the Library of
Congress Name Authority Cooperative Program (LC/NACO). Performs
original cataloging and complex contributed cataloging of library materials
in all formats, in all Western European languages following AACR2 and
Library of Congress policy. Creates name and subject authority records
as appropriate, determines proper forms of headings and expands
subject headings to meet changing needs of highly specialized users of
the Libraries. Codes all cataloging data for input into OCLC, based on
USMARC Format for Bibliographic Data.

Qualifications:
Required: Skill in original cataloging, i.e. use of AACR2, LC classification,
LC Subject Headings, MARC formats, bibliographic utility input (OCLC or
RLIN), local automated library system such as NOTIS, and knowledge of
foreign languages. Skill in authority control, i.e. use of AACR2 as
interpreted by LC, participation in the Name Authority Cooperative
Program (NACO), and planning or implementing local or national authority
control projects. Skill in written and oral communications. Applicant must
be U.S. citizen.

Salary and Benefits: The Smithsonian Institution Libraries is seeking an
experienced Librarian, GS-1410-11/12 at $38,330/45,939 per year.
