Position Announcement

TITLE:   Assistant Head of Information Services for Liaison and Collection
Development

RESPONSIBILITIES:   This new position is responsible for management of
collection development activities and liaison with academic departments.  In
addition to this position, the management team of Information Services
consists of the department head, assistant heads for reference and
government documents, and the coordinator of user instruction.  Duties
include supervision of nine subject librarians who also provide reference
service and user instruction, review of approval plans, and collaboration
with others in the planning and implementation of policies relating to a $3
million budget for materials and electronic access.  Represents the Library
in collection development groups nationally, regionally, and in Texas.

QUALIFICATIONS:   ALA-accredited degree is required, as well as five years
of relevant experience in an academic or research library.  Candidates need
broad knowledge and experience with collection development, scholarly
communication, and the transition to an electronic environment.  Strong
communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to work
collaboratively with others in a service-oriented library system.
Supervisory experience is preferred, as is a graduate degree in a subject
field.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:   Minimum of $34,000 at the assistant or associate
librarian rank, depending on qualifications.  Benefits include choice of
retirement programs, including TIAA-CREF; 15 state holidays; partial moving
expenses; and no state or local income tax.

GENERAL INFORMATION:  Texas Tech University, with an enrollment of over
24,000, is one of four major comprehensive state universities in Texas.  A
wide range of academic programs is offered in eleven colleges and schools
including law and medicine.  There are nearly 100 master's degree offerings
and 50 at the doctoral level.  The TTU Libraries have over 1.3 million
volumes and a budget of $6.7 million.  The Lubbock area (pop. 224,000) is
the West Texas center for higher education, agriculture, health care,

                                Professional Position

Professional librarians at UCLA are eleven-month academic appointees.
They are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, one day per
month of sick leave, reductions in incidental fees, and all other
perquisites granted to non-faculty academic personnel.  The University
has an excellent retirement system and sponsors a variety of group
health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans.

A candidate for appointment shall have a professional background of

DESCRIPTION OF UNIT:
The Cataloging Department, located in the University Research Library
(URL), is the largest of the seven cataloging centers in the UCLA
Library system.  It is primarily responsible for cataloging and
preparing more than 70,000 monographs, serials, audio-visual materials,
computer files (including selected Internet resources), and government
documents for URL, which serves the social sciences, humanities and
education; for the College Library, which serves undergraduates; and
for branch libraries serving the fine arts, music and management.  The
Department is organized into 5 team-oriented sections: Authority,
Continuations (Serials) Cataloging, Monographic Cataloging, Rapid
Cataloging, and Records Management and Physical Processing.  Within the
Department, the Continuations Cataloging Section is responsible for
cataloging serials titles in all roman-alphabet languages and formats,
as well as updating and maintaining existing serials records in OCLC
and ORION, the integrated information system of the UCLA Library.
Cataloging is done directly in OCLC in accordance with AACR2, LCRI,
LCSH, and the Library of Congress classification schedules.  Serials
records are usually created in accordance with the  CONSER Program's
standards.  Continuations catalogers also contribute authority records
to NACO.  The Library has recently chosen a vendor for its local system
and expects to migrate from ORION to the new client/server system by
December 1997.

DUTIES:
Under the general supervision of the Head of URL Cataloging,
manages the Continuations Cataloging Section, including ongoing review
and revision of policies and procedures in a highly automated and
changing environment, and performs serials cataloging according to the
standards outlined above.  In addition to the Head, the Section is
staffed by 2 FTE librarians and 2 FTE staff.  Has personal
responsibility for the selection, supervision, and evaluation of the
members of the Continuations Cataloging Section.  Serves as a liaison
with other library units, especially the Serials Department.  Consults
with other cataloging agencies on serials issues and explores
opportunities for increased coordination and cooperation.  Coordinates
the Section's CONSER and NACO operations and participates in cataloging
meetings and standards setting on a national level.  Keeps apprised of
developments and provides leadership, locally and nationally, in developing
policies and standards for providing access to both print-based and
electronic serials.  Participates actively as a member of the
Cataloging Department's management team and advises the Department Head
on serials issues.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated managerial, planning, leadership, communication, and
interpersonal skills and experience in an academic or research library.
Ability to work with a variety of foreign languages, with reading
knowledge of at least two.  Direct knowledge of and experience with
USMARC formats for serials, including at least five years' cataloging
experience in an automated environment, three of which must be cataloging
serials. Thorough knowledge of AACR2 and the Library of Congress Rule
Interpretations.  Experience with the Library of Congress subject
headings and classification.  Experience with a bibliographic utility,
preferably OCLC.  Knowledge of Program for Cooperative Cataloging
standards, especially CONSER.
