FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES

Florida International University (FIU) is the fastest growing unit of the
State University System of Florida and one of the most rapidly growing
urban, multi-campus,  comprehensive universities in the United States.  In
operation only 25 years, FIU is rated annually as one of America's best
universities by U.S. News and World Report, and as one of the country's
top 10 public commuter institutions by Money Magazine.  With 13 schools
and colleges offering over 200 undergraduate/graduate programs, and a
student enrollment of 30,000 students from all 50 states and 120

Dominating the University Park Campus is an 8-story library scheduled for
April, 1998, completion and designed for the information technology
revolution.  At the North Campus thirty miles away is a second
state-of-the-art library.  The total library collection comprises more
than 1,100,000 volumes, and subscriptions to scholarly journals exceed 7,000.
The Libraries seek to fill the following positions:

HEAD, CATALOG DEPARTMENT (University Park)
Responsibilities: Supervise staff of 3 catalog librarians & 11 support
staff, perform & oversee original cataloging in variety of formats,
oversee database maintenance, & online authority work; coordinate
cataloging activities with North Campus.  Required qualifications: MLS
from ALA-accredited school; 5 years professional experience with increased
supervisory responsibility;  knowledge of AACR2r, LCSH, LC Classification,
LCRI, principles of authority control; experience with OCLC; strong
interpersonal skills; demonstrated analytical & problem-solving skills;
demonstrated initiative & awareness of trends & developments in
cataloging & emerging  technologies.  Desired qualifications: Knowledge of
Internet/WWW; Windows applications in  cataloging; NOTIS experience.
Rank: Associate to University Librarian.
Salary: Dependent on rank, qualifications & experience, $38,000-$44,000.

RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT LIBRARIAN (North Campus)
Responsibilities: Supervision, training & operational management of
Serials & Acquisitions Sections (4 full-time staff); administration of
budgets (serials, monographs, & binding);  collection management; &
preservation.  Required qualifications: MLS from ALA-accredited
school; evidence of excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work
cooperatively in rapidly changing environment; demonstrated ability to
communicate effectively, orally & in writing;  serials & acquisitions
experience/course work.  Rank: Instructor Librarian.  Salary: $27,000.

REFERENCE LIBRARIAN (3 positions)
Reference librarians provide instruction & support for 100+ databases &
services, including state-wide OPAC (NOTIS) with mounted databases &
gateways to remote services; 40+ networked CDs, LEXIS-NEXIS; RLIN;
Internet/WWW access.  Required qualifications: MLS from ALA-accredited
school; evidence of excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work
cooperatively in rapidly changing environment; demonstrated ability to
communicate effectively, orally & in writing; reference course work, &
experience/course work in electronic information services.
Rank: Instructor Librarian.  Salary: $ 27,000.

Electronic Reference Services Coordinator (University Park)
Responsibilities: Manage new facility with 40+ computers & service desk;
help manage infrastructure for electronic reference services; provide
general reference desk service, including  some evening/weekends; provide
library instruction using print, electronic, Internet-based resources;
serve as a collection development/user education liaison to science &
engineering programs.  Desired qualifications: some reference experience
(including electronic); experience/course work in microcomputer networks;
supervisory experience. Strong interest in technological applications to
reference services.

Evening/Weekend Reference Librarian
(2 positions, 1 ea. University Park & North Campus)
Responsibilities: Provide general reference desk service & library
instruction in broad range of disciplines using print, electronic &
Internet-based sources; design & maintain WWW materials; develop print &
electron guides, instructional tools; develop reference collection.

Benefits for all positions: 22 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave,
TIAA/CREF or other retirement options, health/life insurance options.  No
