David,
We catalog both the annual and the monthly, quarterly, etc.
titles. In PALS we create 2 serial checkin records. We can use the link
command if we want the holdings for both to show up on each title. We
also have the option to create multiple serial checkin records for one
bibliographic record in case we decided to catalog only one of the
titles. Each one has the appropriate freqency, but the same bib id (OCLC
number) and the holdings checked in on both records will link to the one bib
record.

We use DRA at Mississippi State University. Sometimes we use a
separate bibliographic record for annual cummulations but in many
cases that is not possible. So for titles like West's Southern
Reporter, we create two pattern records and two copy records on the
same bib record---one for the unbound pieces and another for the
bound volumes. This way we can track and show receipt of both as
well as claim the bound volumes (which you can't do if you're
checking them in as a special issue).

David and others,
Our library uses the III serial module for checking in our periodicals.
Usually we download both the individual issue and the cumulative OCLC
records and use them separately for checking in. However, we do have a
few titles where we just check in the cumulative issue by
creating/inserting a special box on the individual issue record.

Hi David
We have a system called Best Seller, and what I do on the Serials module in
a case like that is create 2 subscriptions - one for the monthlies or
whatever and one for the annual cumulation. They are all checked in and we
keep budget records , etc for only one of the subscriptions.

If you create 2 subscriptions, don't you have control over what you display
at the OPAC?
