The ARL Statistics and Measurement Program will sponsor two workshops
on user surveys for academic libraries in 1997. The one-day workshop
has been designed in response to a growing interest in developing
user-based assessment of library services in academic institutions.
The workshops will be held:
March 31, 1997 - Irvine, California
April 11, 1997 - Nashville, Tennessee
Purpose and Overview:
Fostering an organizational climate that is user-centered and
responsive to the information needs of faculty and students is becoming
increasingly important to academic institutions. Understanding what
users want and being able to collect information about their needs and
translate this information into decisions and actions is a critical
element in leading a successful organization. Total quality management
models are fostering a cultural tradition that places the user at the
center of organizational decision making processes and measures success
based on the users.
Participants will have the opportunity to develop objectives for doing
a user survey, discuss issues regarding sampling methods and deriving a
valid sample from a target population.
Additionally, the workshop will include questionnaire design,
pretesting, measurement scales, and data analysis. Available options
for contracting with different agencies to carry through the logistics
will be explored in addition to offering tips on packaging the materi,
return rates, and costs. The workshop also includes a brief
introduction to the issues of reliability and vailidity as well as how
administrators can translate usser survey results into decisions and
actions.
