Head of Cataloging

North Carolina State University Libraries invites applications and
nominations for the position of Head of Cataloging.  The Libraries is
positioning itself as a leader in new information technologies and seeks a
Head of Cataloging who will bring vision and energy to designing and
implementing state-of-the-art organization of all the Libraries'
resources.  These resources include printed materials, electronic formats,
multimedia, Internet resources, and a broad spectrum of architectural
drawings, photographs, graphics, and manuscripts in Special Collections.
Printed materials include a large government documents collection slated
for online control and access. The Cataloging Department was recently
reorganized to strengthen client services, special projects, and research
and development activities. The Libraries' online catalog runs on DRA
software.  In addition to the online catalog, the Libraries provides
access to over 60 electronic databases as well as electronic journals and
other Internet resources.

Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Associate Director for Collection
Management, Organization, and Preservation, oversees the supervision,
evaluation, training, and professional development of a department of
thirty staff, including eight librarians. Management responsibilities
include setting goals, providing direction, and communicating priorities;
establishing and revising policies and procedures; streamlining workflows;
coordinating units within the department; and coordinating the work of the
department with the rest of the Libraries.  Assesses department's resource
needs, prepares hourly wage and equipment budget requests and monitors
expenditures.  Encourages continuing education and professional
development, and creates an environment supportive of high performance.
Participates in the NCSU Libraries' strong culture of team management.
Plays a central role in the Libraries' organization of Internet resources,
and coordinates department's activities related to the delivery of
information and resources via a variety of electronic means.  Explores
innovative ways to use technology, including the evaluation and
incorporation of vendor-produced catalog records and enhancements to
existing records.  Participates in library-wide planning and serves on
library-wide committees, task forces, and teams.  Is active professionally
and contributes to developments in the field.

Qualifications

Required:  ALA-accredited MLS.  Minimum five years of successful
supervisory experience in technical services in an academic or research
library; minimum five years cataloging experience. Excellent leadership,
managerial, and planning skills.  Demonstrated ability to engage staff in
the process of change, especially in the organization of information in
electronic formats.
 Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Experience with
technical services operations in a networked environment.  Direct
experience with MARC formats, AACR2, Library of Congress classification
and subject headings, and a major national bibliographic utility.  Solid
understanding of and commitment to cataloging standards and guidelines,
authority control, and the maintenance of high-quality data in an
automated, user-oriented environment.  Experience with integrated library
systems; demonstrated ability to work in a networked environment and
communicate with other departments.  Progressively responsible experience
with personnel management, planning, and budgeting.  Experience with teams
and consensus-building.  Demonstrated commitment to user-responsiveness.
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse staff at all levels.
Significant involvement in professional organizations and a record of
continued professional development. Preferred:  Significant experience in
organizing information in electronic formats. The University and the

The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the
Association of Research Libraries and the Center for Research Libraries.
Together with Duke University and the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill, NCSU founded the Triangle Research Libraries Network, a
cooperative effort of distinction among four major universities with
combined resources approaching 12 million volumes, and collections budgets
totaling more than $22 million.

Salary and Benefits

The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience,
not less than $47,500 for this position.  Librarians at NCSU have academic
status without tenure or rank.  Benefits include:  26 days vacation;
health insurance (comprehensive major medical or HMO), and TIAA/CREF,
state, or other retirement options.  Additional and optional dental, life,
disability, deferred compensation, and legal plans are available.  Tuition
waiver program for all campuses of The University of North Carolina is
available.

     DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:  This position is located in the National
     Library of Medicine, Division of Library Operations, Public Services
     Division, Preservation and Collection Management Section.  The staff
     provides a focal point for the preservation of NLM's collections;
     manages in-house and contract actions for preservation activities and
     management of the general collection; manages staff and user
     preservation education and disaster prevention and recovery programs;
     and provides consultation and guidance to biomedical libraries and
     others on preservation issues and methods.  This position serves as a
     Systems Librarian participating in the design, testing and
     implementation of automated systems to aid Section staff in tracking
     materials during such preservation activities as binding and
     microfilming and in identifying and acquiring materials missing from
     the collection.  Work involves planning, designing, testing,
     implementing and evaluating computer applications and related
     technology; defining and requesting modifications to operational and
     developmental systems; preparing documentation for computer
     applications such as flow-charts and  writing manuals; conducting
     training sessions on new or enhanced applications; planning the
     preservation and access to newer library technologies in digital
     formats, such as CD-ROM's and electronic journals; planning and
     developing contract actions for automation projects including file
     conversion, special file maintenance activities, etc., preparing
     statements of work, serving on technical review groups and acting as
     project officer; and serving as lead microcomputer support coordinator
     providing assistance to Section staff using microcomputer software and
     hardware.

Auburn University invites applications and nominations for the position
of Dean of Libraries. Reporting to the University Provost, the Dean of
Libraries is responsible for the administration of the main library and
two branch libraries. Auburn University is seeking an individual with
creative problem-solving abilities who can utilize available resources to
maximize the potential of Auburn University Libraries as a
state-of-the-art, user-centered library ready for the 21st Century.

Established in 1856 and later becoming Alabama's 1872 land grant
institution, Auburn is the state's largest university (22,000 students)
and is a Carnegie II comprehensive university.  The University is located
in Auburn, Alabama, which is situated between Atlanta, Georgia and
Montgomery, Alabama, where residents (80,000 area population) enjoy a
variety of cultural, entertainment, and outdoor activities in a superb
climate and natural environment.

Auburn University Libraries, a member of the Association of Research
Libraries, consists of the Ralph Brown Draughon Library, the Cary
Veterinary Medical Library, and the Architecture Library.  RBD Library, a
377,000 sq. ft. recently expanded structure, houses most of the 2.4
million volumes, 1.5 million government documents, and 19,000 current
serials.  The Libraries serve as a selective depository for US government
publications and a depository for US patents and trademarks.  The
Libraries utilize considerable electronic resources, including a
library-wide CD network and the NOTIS system for local and state catalogs
as well as numerous online databases. The Libraries are staffed by 46
tenure track faculty and 89 support staff with a total annual budget of
8.5 million dollars.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Dean provides creative leadership and vision,
places a priority on the user interface, promotes new methods of
information retrieval and dispersal, is a strong internal and external
advocate for the libraries, develops and carries out a strategy for
private giving, and encourages professional growth for the library
faculty and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Candidates must have an advanced degree in
library science from an ALA-accredited program, substantial administrative
experience in an academic environment, and a significant record of
research and professional achievement to qualify for academic rank.
Candidates should also offer evidence of (1) strong and creative
leadership, (2) commitment to quality service, (3) a familiarity with
expectations and needs of students, staff and faculty in a large research
university, (4) a clear understanding of the evolving role of the academic
research library, electronic library technology and scholarly
communication, (5) the ability to work collegially and communicate
effectively with internal and external constituencies, and (6) an ability
to secure sponsored funds. Desired: Ph.D.
