Subject: Consortium Licensing

FROM KEN METZNER, Vice President and Director of Electronic Publishing

     ACADEMIC PRESS JOURNALS
To correct any possible confusion about AP journals on IDEAL:
AP's 173 journals online at www.idealibrary.com are ONLY licensed in
large packages of journals to consortia of institutions, irrespective
of whether they are accessed directly or through a gateway such as
Blackwell's Navigator. In all cases a license agreement (APPEAL) must
be signed by AP and the consortium and/or its members, even if the
agreement is brokered by a subscription agent. All subscription agents
     have been briefed in detail.

There is one exception, an experiment with J. Molecular Biology and
Genomics. E-access to these two journals on IDEAL is provided
separately (as well as in APPEAL packages) and is free to
institutional print subscribers. In addition, 1996 issues of these two
journals are available in a limited-term trial through Blackwell's
     Navigator.

There are no other agreements, "verbal" or otherwise, between AP and
Blackwell's regarding possible future links from Navigator to IDEAL.
Technically, such links could not be established before the second
quarter of 1997. IDEAL has been operational since January 1996. Any
linking offered to one subscription agent will be offered to all.
