Here at UWG, we circulate virtually everything. Journals, both bound and
unbound circulate for 24 hours with a limit of two and no renewals for
student patrons. Faculty may check out for (I think) one week. Overdues
are $1.00 per day.

Out of 28 people on staff, only two want to keep checking out periodicals.
The remainder of the staff keep trying to change these two's minds -- one
of them is the director. Reasons: we barcoded all books, but not journals,
thus circulating them requires more work; journals are more fragile/
sometimes irreplaceable; when someone has checked out a journal, other
patrons are denied access. Maybe before I retire we won't be letting them
leave the premises.

We have a medium sized collection of periodicals (approx. 8000 titles)
which are restricted to use in the library prior to binding. We do make
exceptions for items to be checked out and it is a judgment call based on
the need to do something which cannot be accomplished in the library (take
photos of ads in the magazine, take to class for a presentation, scan an
image, etc.) We apply this criterion to all (faculty, students, etc.) and
occasionally have to recall something. Pieces are checked out for 24 hours
and a fine is charged if the piece isn't back. We use the same fine
schedule used for reserve materials. We generally have under 20 exceptions
to the rule a month (our student body is over 20,000 so I consider this is
a very small number). Exceptions are handled by staff in the Journal Room
using a manual system.

Our bound volumes can be checked out for 2 days and this is handled
by the circ desk.

Loyola University Libraries policy for the Circulation of Periodicals.
Faculty members may charge out current and bound periodicals for a period
of seventy-two hours. Under most circumstances periodicals may be
renewed for an additional seventy-two hours. There is no limit on the
number of volumes that may be charged out, but borrowers are asked to
take no more material than they expect to use within this period of
time.

With a faculty sponsor, students may charge out periodicals. The
sponsoring faculty member should contact the Serials Librarian, or Serials
Assistant, before the student comes to charge out the material. Students
may keep periodicals for twenty-four hours. Periodicals should be charged
out at the Serials Department. When the department is closed, transactions
may be completed at the Circulation Desk. Periodicals should be returned
to the Serials Department.
