CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS
THE 1997 FEATHER RIVER INSTITUTE
May 15-18, 1997 at Blairsden in the Northern California Sierra Nevada Mountains
The 1997 Feather River Institute will explore a variety of ideas and
concepts in an atmosphere conductive to discussion, debate and the vibrant
give and take of interactive discourse. The following themes are some that
have been identified:
ACQUISITIONS PACKAGES AND CONSORTIAL AGREEMENTS
* Are we losing our voices with consortial agreements?
* What is the greater good and who should pay for it?
* Have the days of title-specific subscriptions become numbered?
* Are our rights protected or constricted with licensing agreements?
CHANGING SUBSCRIBER SERVICES
* Are we changing the way libraries and subscription agents do business?
* Can libraries afford to take risks on new subscriber services?
LIBRARY LEADERSHIP
* Who will be the library leaders of the next decade?
* Will leaders come from traditional librarianship or from other backgrounds?
* What will be their vision for libraries?
* Will they have both the vision and management skills to enable that vision?
* Will they continue to adopt management practices from business?
VENDOR\PUBLISHER\LIBRARY RELATIONSHIPS
* What issues are critical to vendors and publishers?
* What changes are they making in order to survive?
* Balancing print and electronic subscriptions.
* Adding value to the information chain.
* What makes a good acquisitions department?
* What are vendors most irritating experiences with libraries?
LIBRARY SCHOOLS AND LIBRARY LITERATURE: CHANGE AGENTS FOR THE PROFESSION
* Are library schools preparing graduates who can lead libraries into the
next decade?
* Are library schools providing "veteran" librarians with the continuing
education needed to manage in a changing environment?
* Library literature: quantity and quality.
* What is the librarian's role in the profusion of scholarly information?
Unique among library conferences, the Feather River Institute is noted for
its small size, beautiful and rustic setting and informality - all enhancing
the unlimited opportunity for engaging your colleagues in the issues of the
day.
(Attendance is limited to 65)
The Institute is looking for invigorated participants to serve as discussion
leaders, debaters, facilitators and all-around stimulators of lively
discourse on the topics above or any others of interest. Send your ideas for
program content in an abstract of 200 words or less and your proposed
participation no later than December 15, 1996 to:
