I'm not sure how relevant to the original question this is, but it might
be helpful to Ms. Coleman. We keep a "dead file" of periodicals that we
once had but no longer do. An item only goes into the dead file if we
have 0 holdings. It takes less room than a shelf list and has been
really handy upon occasion. By the way, we still keep a serials shelf
list too.

Dear Louise, I think Mr. Anderson is right (even if he has a
sence of humor, which is never a minus). It is good to have
a back up. We at The New York Public Library still keeping
our old fashined ( but very reliable) Kardex in edition to
INNOVAQUE. Don't be harsh on him.

What really counts are the vols. on the shelf, not what any records say
your library holds or should hold. Unfortunately they do disappear or
are mislaid. Old shelflist records quickly be become worthless when
replaced by electronic records, especially, if item records are created
for each volume. I would add any historical notes to the electronic
record that are wanted then discard the paper record.
